However, the incredible Pluto's Cave doesn't get the attention it deserves when it comes to underground exploration. This hidden cave is both impressive and easily accessible. Pluto's Cave in Northern California is most easily accessed via the small town of Weed. From the town, you'll drive along Highway 97 and turn left along the 99-97 Cutoff. After a few miles, you'll see a dirt road marked by a pole that says "Pluto's Cave". This is where you'll find the trailhead.

The trailhead area is easily recognizable. There is a small dirt parking lot and a large sign listing standard rules for exploring the cave.

The beauty of this cool lava tube is that you don't need to wait for official Pluto's Cave tours - you can simply set out on your own.

The trail to the cave is less than a mile and flat. It's definitely not a strenuous trek. The area is absolutely beautiful and worthy of a few pictures. After about a quarter mile, the opening of the cave will come into view.

The opening of the cave is pretty hidden from view, which makes finding it even more exciting.

You'll definitely want to be careful as you enter the cave, as you'll be descending down loose lava rock. Once you touch down on the cave floor, you'll truly realize how massive this place is.

The cave is a partially collapsed lava tube that is believed to be roughly 190,000 years old. It was first discovered in 1863 by a man who came across it while looking for stray cattle. After further exploration, it was discovered that the cave was used by Pre-Columbian people.

Pluto's Cave is actually composed of three interconnected caves. The first cave is a photographer's delight since a hole in the ceiling in the cave lets a huge flood of light pour into the darkness. It's a breathtaking sight.

Parts of the cave do get very dark, so you'll want to bring a reliable flashlight. The cave is accessible to most, but you will probably have to climb over rocks and even crawl as you get deeper into the cave.

If you're a cave enthusiast, a trip to Pluto's Cave is a must. The remote location makes this feel like a true backcountry adventure. You'll even be treated to a beautiful view of Mt. Shasta!
