If you love the outdoors, you already know that South Dakota is THE place to be; but did you know that there are countless smaller state parks outside of Custer, Palisades, and Good Earth? When you are ready to see and try something new, you will want to explore one or all of these five lesser-known state parks to visit in South Dakota:
1. Hartford Beach State Park (Corona)
Do you think that Hartford Beach sounds like a beautiful and tropical oasis? You got that right! In fact, the beach -- which surrounds Big Stone Lake -- is THE place to be come summer, as it provides not only fun on and around the water, but lots of shaded trails as well. However, you can visit year-round and even go hiking or cross-country skiing in the winter months. 2. Oakwood Lakes State Park (Bruce)
Another picturesque park along the water is Oakwood Lakes, which is arguably the best spot in the state for outdoor recreation (eight connecting glacial lakes, anyone?). From some of the best hiking trails in South Dakota as well as biking, to boating, fishing, and camping, you are guaranteed only the best at Oakwood Lakes State Park. 3. Union Grove State Park (Beresford)
Not to be confused with Union Grove in Iowa, this SoDak state park got its start as a County Park in 1936 and has since grown into not only an outdoor paradise, but also a pristine spot for photography. (I mean, you do see the lush landscape in this picture, right?) Birding is also a big deal at this state park if you're looking for things to do outside in South Dakota. 4. Roy Lake State Park (Lake City)
Who would have thought that South Dakota has so many state parks revolving around lakes, right? What makes Roy Lake stand out from all the other parks, you ask? 5. Newton Hills State Park (Canton)
Are you a lover of wildlife, especially birds? Then get ready to go crazy for Newton Hills; this southeast South Dakota park that is home to an estimated 200 different species of birds, as well as deer, fox, and marmots.
