Five Different Planets Will Align In The South Dakota Night Sky During An Incredibly Rare Display
It’s time to set your alarm clocks, South Dakota, as a truly incredible and rare celestial event is now occurring in our nighttime sky! Do you have your coffee, bathrobe, and camera ready? Then you are set to see the five different planets aligning over South Dakota:
Taking place most of June 2022 is the aligning of five planets, which should be visible to the naked eye during the early morning hours.
Occurring most mornings in the half-hour before dawn (with a mid-month peak), South Dakotans will be able to see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn all in a row, with Mercury located just along the horizon.
Please note: During the summer, sunrise in South Dakota takes place just after 5 a.m., so plan to be outside by 4:30 for your best chance to see the planets.
According to a press release from
Sky & Telescope, June 24th will be the best time to see the planets, as "Mercury will be much easier to snag," with a bonus of a "waning crescent Moon positioned between Venus and Mars, serving as a proxy Earth."
Trust us: You do not want to miss your chance to see this incredible event, as the last time these 5 planets aligned was in 2004!
Once the sun rises, the planets will get lost in the glare.
