Few people know about the following county park in South Carolina (even many of the locals don’t realize it’s here!). That’s because Stono River County Park is a small, 85.5-acre park that’s hidden next to the Limehouse Bridge along the beautiful Stono River on the mainland side of the unofficial border between Charleston and Johns Island.
What the park lacks in size it more than makes up for in views of the marsh, the river, and the Limehouse Bridge.
But the park has one more attraction that makes it worth the drive: a 12-acre island accessible via a long boardwalk that's open to foot traffic and bicycles.
In all, Stono River County Park has 1.5 miles of both wooded and boardwalk trails to explore.

The main trail begins at the parking area and travels on the boardwalk over the marsh to the small island in the river. From there, it circles the perimeter of the island, with stops along the way to learn and discover cool aspects about the area's diverse ecology.
No matter the weather (well, unless it's raining), this hidden gem is ideal for a little picnic and some sightseeing.
Thousands upon thousands of cars literally drive by this relatively new (opened in 2019) park every single day and know nothing about the park.
Park amenities include restrooms, a drinking fountain with chilled water (very important in the summer!), bike racks and a bike repair station including air for tires, picnic tables, and 39 parking spaces. Also, admission is $1 per person.
