Outdoor adventures in the Palmetto State are a world apart from other spots in the U.S. Everything is better in South Carolina - especially the pull of a full moon. It changes everything - including the tide. If you want an extraordinary and different way to experience the full moon, then check in at Coastal Expeditions in Charleston for one of their many Full Moon Paddles.
With launch points on both the Isle of Palms and Folly Beach/Bowens Island, Coastal Expeditions is poised for full moon kayaking in multiple spots.
And since the full moon really hangs around for more than one night, you could literally see it from both locations by booking two nights in a row!
The adventure begins with a short on-shore orientation right after you get fitted with your gear.
The tour includes all of the gear you'll need for the adventure, including a sea kayak, personal flotation device, and paddle. And then you're on your way!
First up on the agenda: watch the sunset.
As you're paddling off into the sunset, you may be treated to an occasional dolphin sighting. If you've never seen a sunset from the water, then you're in for a peaceful and special occasion. There's something about watching the day come to an official end that's perfectly calming — especially when you're being gently rocked by the water underneath.
As happens every evening when the sun sets, the moon comes up — and not always in that order!
Don't be surprised if you actually get to watch the full moon rise ahead of the sunset, as often happens, particularly on nights with clear skies when the moon rising is more visible.
The tour lasts up to three hours and is hosted by an experienced and knowledgeable guide.
All you'll need to bring along is a pair of water shoes, drinking water, a hat, and sunscreen.
We love discovering new and unusual ways to enjoy South Carolina. Have you ever taken a full moon paddle tour, or seen the moon rise from the water on your own kayak? We'd love to know!
