Watch The Sunset At Fort Adams State Park, A Unique Historic Area In Rhode Island

There’s nothing like relaxing and watching the sky flood with colors as the sun sinks below the horizon. Rhode Island, with its miles of coastline, has no shortage of places where you can catch a spectacular sunset. If you’re looking for one of the absolute best sunsets in the state, take a trip to Fort Adams State Park, a historic landmark with unparalleled views.

Resting at the mouth of the harbor in Newport, Rhode Island, Fort Adams State Park offers panoramic views of both the harbor itself and Narragansett Bay. Named for President John Adams, the fortress is rich with history. It was used by the United States Army for over a century, and later by the United States Navy for about a decade.

In 1965, the State of Rhode Island acquired Fort Adams, and it became Fort Adams State Park. Today it’s recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The fort is open to the public and welcomes visitors for both historic tours and recreation. Each year, the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals are held here at Fort Adams.

When you arrive at the park, follow the signs for the Fort Adams Bay Walk, and you’ll be treated to a scenic stroll along the water. Three lighthouses – Castle Hill, Beavertail, and Rose Island – are visible along the west side of the walk. You’ll also be able to watch sailboats and yachts cruise the waters of the Narragansett Bay.

Here on the west side of the Bay Walk is where you can enjoy a stunning Rhode Island sunset. Watch as the sun dips below the sails of the boats drifting by, and the sky is painted with color.

The Newport Bridge in the distance makes for a truly picturesque experience. As the sky deepens to a rich purple and the sun sinks below the horizon, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the history and beauty that surround you.
