Rhode Island’s Stepstone Falls Looks Even More Spectacular In the Winter

Tourists flock to Rhode Island during the summer for its beautiful sandy beaches, breathtaking ocean views, and to-die-for seafood. What some don’t realize is how truly sensational the quiet of winter is in Rhode Island. Chances are you’ve explored just about every corner of the state during the warmer months, but have you ever seen Rhode Island’s Stepstone Falls in the winter? If not, plan a visit after a fresh snowfall this season.

Tucked away in Exeter's Arcadia Management Area, Stepstone Falls is perhaps the most popular and beloved waterfall in Rhode Island, making it a must-see each season.

After a fresh snowfall, when the ground is still free of human footprints, set off on the picturesque 2.7-mile Ben Utter Trail that leads straight to this natural wonder.

Scoring a moderate rating, the trail poses a few additional challenges when you add snow, and potentially ice, into the mix.

Keep an eye out for fallen trees and roots jutting up from the ground.

Sturdy boots are a must. Depending on the conditions when you set off, the trail may be muddy, icy, or snowy - or a combination of all three.

All those little challenges along the way, however, will be well worth it when you see Stepstone Falls for the first time.

Snap photos of the tumbling waterfall that's particularly pretty when framed by snow and ice.
