Now that the temperatures have started to cool down a little bit, it's a great time to head outside for a hike! Rhode Island has so many wonderful trails that it can be hard to narrow down your choices. Today we're going to venture out to an overlooked natural area that has tons to offer outdoor explorers. At Sprague Farm Town Forest, you can hike through a beautiful woodland setting while checking out the remnants of a 200-year-old farm.
Encompassing over 985 acres, the Sprague Farm Town Forest is preserved by the Glocester Land Trust. The former farmland dates back over 200 years making this a unique property to explore.
There are over ten different trails to check out varying from winding paths through fern forests to wider abandoned farm roads that pass over old stone bridges.
As you begin your journey it may be difficult to image the land as a working farm. Since the farm's demise, the forest has gradually reclaimed the area.
But as you hike the trails, you will encounter the remains of the old farm. Stone walls that once divided pastures and foundations of farm buildings are evident in the woodland.
Follow the blue triangle trail to either the yellow dot or orange triangle connector and it will lead you to the Sprague family cemetery.
As you view the remnants of this abandoned farmland, you can begin to imagine what it must have been like centuries ago. This walk in the woods is more than just a forest hike but also a trip into Rhode Island's past.
