Musée Patamécanique is a private museum located in the historic district of Bristol, Rhode Island. The odd part is, no one knows exactly where. Visitors are told to arrive at a local landmark and are then given wireless headphones and a map by a mysterious stranger. Using these tools you'll hear an unusual history of the area and be led to the secret location of the museum. This unusual start is just the beginning of the Musée Patamécanique experience.
A hybrid between an automaton theater and a cabinet of curiosities, the museum calls on visitors to question everything they know about the physical and metaphysical world.
Founded by artist, inventor, and filmmaker Neil Barden Salley in 2006, the museum celebrates all that is unusual.
The museum's style draws on Dadaism and Absurdist styles, probing big questions with a wink and nod attitude.
"In a world where everything can seem mundane, to preserve one's sense of wonder, one must seek out the little pockets of the strange, mystical, and delightful. The Musee is all of these and more," says visitor Logan Sullivan in a Facebook review.
Visits are made by appointment only and the journey to the museum's hidden location is an important part of the experience.
Reservations can be made online where the museum also offers a list of resources for other unique Rhode Island experiences.
