There is no doubt that Rhode Island's beaches become summertime hot spots for tourists. After all, we are the Ocean State and have mile and miles of stunning shoreline. But there are a handful of low profile beaches where you can escape the crowds. For beach enthusiasts and coastline explorers, these places are no secret — for everyone else, you just might find a new favorite shoreline spot on this list.
1. South Shore Beach, Little Compton
When visiting South Shore Beach you'll need to do a bit of planning. Fill your cooler with drinks and snacks, there is no running water or food concessions at this shoreline spot. There's a strip of white sand but the beach can also be rocky. Enjoy the waves at this little gem of a beach.
2. Cooneymus Cove, Block Island
Not your traditional swimming beach, the surf is too rough, this locale is worth visiting for other reasons. Hiking, beachcombing, fishing, and picnicking are treasured activities at this island spot.
3. Wuskenau Beach, Westerly
Wuskenau Town Beach can be found on Atlantic Avenue not far from Misquamicut State Beach. You can expect the same soft white sand and rolling waves as Misquamicut just fewer people.
4. Napatree Point Conservation Area, Westerly
This conservation area is a hotspot for bird watching and the sunsets are beyond compare. Soft white sand and gentle waves make this a secluded spot for a stroll, swim or sunbathing.
5. Teddy's Beach - Island Park, Portsmouth
This small beach has no facilities or lifeguards but the views are spectacular. Located on the bay, you'll enjoy the tranquil waters of this out-of-the-way place.
6. Third Beach, Middletown
Overlooking Third Beach Harbor, this east-facing beach has a gentler surf than neighboring beaches. Perfect for families, you'll find gentle waters, picnic tables, grills, portable toilets, and a shade structure here.
7. Vaill Beach, Block Island
This rocky but secluded locale on Block Island is undeniably beautiful. Explore the shoreline to find glass floats and seashells. The rough surf and rocky shallows make this a surfing beach rather than a swimming spot.
8. Buttonwoods Beach - Warwick City Park, Warwick
This 126-acre beach park is the largest coastal location on the list. Baseball fields, bicycle paths, and picnic shelters add to the draw of this city beach.
