Rhode Island has an impressive amount of natural beauty, not to mention mile after mile of gorgeous coastline. But when it comes to mountain ranges, the Ocean State comes up a bit short. But the closest thing we have to a mountain, Jerimoth Hill, happens to have the highest point in the state -- and it's a must-see for hikers who enjoy highpointing. And since it's less than a mile in length, it's a great adventure for beginners.
Jerimoth Hill is located in the town of Foster, which is in the northwest part of the state.
There are plenty of road signs, so it's nice and easy to find.
The trail is easily accessible, but that wasn't always the case.
Years ago, Jerimoth Hill made headlines due to a property owner named Henry Richardson, who prohibited people from entering as the only path to the summit crossed his driveway. Richardson was known as The Madman of Jerimoth Hill.
Richardson's belligerence toward hikers made him a local legend -- but eventually, his son intervened and worked it out so that hikers could access the area four times per year.
After Richardson passed away, his property was purchased in 2005 by a family who eventually eded the land to the state. It's now accessible at any time.
The walk is short, but it's nice and scenic.
The trail is well-marked and easy to follow.
Soon, you'll reach the summit, at which point you can say you were at the highest point in Rhode Island.
The hill is 812 feet high. In comparison, Maine's Sugarloaf Mountain is 4,249 feet high.
This may not be much of a hike, but that's exactly what makes it so perfect for beginners.
Plus, it isn't every day you get to experience the highest point in any state. In fact, geography makes that impossible for many.
Rhode Island may not be a mountainous state, but we make up for it with stunning coastline.
And this nice little jaunt will leave you feeling refreshed.
