Poke, delicious diced and seasoned raw fish, has been a staple in Hawaii for decades. It's become more popular on the mainland in recent years, and for that, we are thankful. Recently, Yelp listed their top 100 restaurants in the U.S. for 2020, and we weren't surprised to see Hometown Cafe and Poke Bar on the list. This charming little eatery will turn you into a poke fan.
Located in Providence's diverse Mount Hope neighborhood, Hometown Cafe and Poke Bar opened in 2017.
The owners, Becca and Tiffany, started with a food cart before opening the cafe.
Becca and Tiffany met at a corporate gig, promptly becoming friends and eating their way around the world.
This led them to realize they wanted to pursue their own business rather than working 9 to 5 jobs. Inspired by living in California for years and their frequent trips to Hawaii, they decided to bring poke to Rhode Island.
The menu consists mainly of bowls that blend traditional Hawaiian poke with healthy Californian cuisine.
They only use high quality sushi grade fish and the best possible ingredients, so you know you'll be getting a high quality bowl.
From the Hometown Classic to the California Cool, these bowls will win you over.
Even those that claim they don't like sushi or raw fish sometimes fall in love with poke.
And if you aren't in the mood for anything raw, you can always order a Chicken Works, a Veggie Works, or another bowl off the menu.
You can even create your own bowl.
If you come in the morning, make sure to try one of Hometown's signature toasts.
A savory toast with a coffee or a juice is the perfect way to start the day.
Hometown Cafe and Poke Bar is open daily from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. except for Saturday and Sunday, when they open at 10 a.m.
The mobile food cart is also still in operation throughout the city, and it's even available for your private event.
Have you ever tried poke? Now you can, without even leaving the Ocean State. And if you have a favorite place in Rhode Island you think we should write about, feel free to let us know.
