If you've ever been inside Far West in Providence, you know it has a unique character, thanks in part to its eclectic vintage decor. Hanging out in this speakeasy-like space feels a bit like drinking in a relative's home — if your relatives are both rich and quirky. And if you look around, you'll notice a few leftover items from the building's days as a jewelry factory.
Far West opened in June of 2019 inside the Rooms & Works building at 55 Cromwell Ave.
The owners, Michele Fryer and Luke Tabor, didn't intend for their bar to be a speakeasy, but that's the way this space is set up.
To enter, you'll have to find the building's call box, scroll to Far West, then dial #075 to be buzzed in.
It's a bit tricky at first, but it's well worth making the effort.
The space inside is small, but it's absolutely packed with character.
When Fryer and Tabor were designing the space, they noticed the building contained a lot of artifacts and cabinetry from its days as a jewelry factory. They put it to good use.
Perhaps the most obvious ode to the jewelry factory is the bar itself, which was made from the factory’s drawers that once held trinkets and charms.
The bar really stands out, even in this richly decorated space.
Of course, people don't go to bars entirely for the ambiance — the cocktails have to be good as well.
Luckily, the drinks here never disappoint. Tabor, who has years of industry experience, is the bartender, and the cocktails are both creative and delicious.
The drink menu rotates seasonally, and you'll typically see a daily special or two being offered as well.
Of course, you're more than welcome to order a glass of wine or even a mocktail if you'd rather not imbibe.
Far West has a small menu of snacks and small plates, with a focus on charcuterie style items.
Sometimes you'll see local favorite Hotline Pizza selling slices here as well. Also, it's worth noting that all the flowers and herbs used at the bar (for food, drinks, and decor) are harvested from Fryer's community garden plot in the neighborhood.
Far West is open Wednesday through Sunday.
Wednesday through Saturday hours are 6 p.m. to midnight, and on Sundays, they're open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
