Pennsylvania's rich history includes a vibrant railway system. As transportation advanced and more people turned to cars, however, the railroad industry lost some of its luster. Train stations, once bustling, now sat empty, some abandoned, just waiting to be restored to their former glory. This train-themed restaurant in Pennsylvania, complete with a gift shop, will take you back to a time long gone. Pay a visit to Tamaqua Station Restaurant in Pennsylvania and soak up the sweet nostalgia.
The Tamaqua Railroad Station, now restored to its former self, first appeared on the Tamaqua landscape in 1874. Constructed by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad, Tamaqua Station impressed visitors with its lavish Victorian-era decor.
During its heyday in the early 20th century, the Tamaqua Railroad Station welcomed more than 40 passenger trains each day, with many of the passengers stopping at the station for a hot meal at the onsite restaurant.
The Tamaqua Railroad Station closed in 1961 and was the victim of arson in 1981 but the community came together to save and to restore the railroad station, once the centerpiece of the community.
Today, the former railroad station serves as Schuykill County's Official Visitor's Center and the site of the Schuykill River National & State Heritage Area. Nestled within the restored train station sits the Tamaqua Station Restaurant.
