And, because of our rich history, we have plenty of endearing nicknames for Pittsburgh. Read on below to see seven of the nicknames for Pittsburgh we all use (at least sometimes). Then, share your favorites below!
1. The City of Champions
Pittsburgh has certainly earned the nickname The City of Champions. And, if you're from Pittsburgh, you know exactly why. Six Super Bowl victories. Five Stanley Cups. Five World Series. Is there any doubt that Pittsburgh will continue to be the City of Champions far into the future?
2. The Steel City
Pittsburgh's rich history as a steel town earned it the moniker the Steel City. Steel still plays a role in the city. But, gone are the days of smog covering Pittsburgh as other industries - including tech and medical - have become just as prominent as steel.
3. The Burgh
We can thank William Pitt for the "h" at the end of Pittsburgh. Most of us use the nickname the Burgh as an affectionate way to refer to Pittsburgh.
4. The City of Bridges
Pittsburgh even beats out Venice, Italy, for the city with the most bridges. The City of Bridges - that's our Burgh - is home to 446 bridges. Venice, on the other hand, lays claim to approximately 400 bridges.
5. Blitzburgh/Sixburgh
Some call it Blitzburgh. Others affectionately refer to it as Sixburgh. Whatever you prefer, the nickname comes straight from the Steelers and their six Super Bowl wins, the most Super Bowl wins of any team in NFL history to date.
6. The Iron City
People might not use the nickname The Iron City as much as they once did. But, it has been a treasured nickname for years. During Pittsburgh's early days and through 1870, the city was known for its production of iron. Thus, the nickname the Iron City was born.
7. The 412
Remember the good old days when we didn't have to dial the area code when making a call in the Pittsburgh area? We were just the 412. Now we share that area code with 724. However, the 724 doesn't quite have the same ring to it as the 412, does it?
