Carve out an entire day, especially if you love spending time outdoors, for your visit to Montour Preserve in Danville, which is open daily from dawn to dusk.
The sprawling nature preserve is perhaps best known for its masterpiece - the 165-acre Lake Chillisquaque. Meander on the water on a kayak or a canoe, or...
Bring your hiking boots or shoes along, too, as you'll have seven miles of trails to explore if you're up for it. The Montour Preserve Trail, for example, spans just under four miles.
No matter where you are in the preserve, keep an eye out for local wildlife. The preserve has two wildlife observation blinds, where visitors can watch and take photos of the animals.
However, if you want to use one of the wildlife blinds, you'll have to first request and receive a special permit. (Request a permit by calling 570-772-4021.)
If you're at the park when the visitors center is open, stop by to learn more about all of the activities at the preserve and to find out about upcoming events.
Montour Preserve is also well-known for its fossil pit, where you can dig for fossils, some that date back nearly 400 million years. Bring everything you need for the dig.
