Experience a piece of railroad history when you hike along the Ironton Rail Trail, which spans from Whitehall Township, through Coplay, and to North Whitehall Township.
The Ironton Railroad first opened in 1861, with the trains used to transport iron ore and limestone to nearby blast furnaces.
Sadly, after a decades-long run, the railroad declined, with the final tracks being removed in the early-1980s.
Today, the Ironton Rail Trail provides walkers, hikers, and bikers with a fun, easy way to enjoy the outdoors and to get a glimpse into local railroad history.
Discover the remnants of the Ironton Railroad (and 23 historical sites) as you hike along the 9.2-mile rail trail that offers numerous access points.
Or, join the Ironton Rail Trail for a guided walk, offered once in the spring and once in the fall, that will provide you with further insight into the historical sites.
Stop to snap photos in front of the historic Saylor Cement Kilns and the concrete phone booth.
And, take a few moments to enjoy the simple beauty of nature along this flat, ADA-compliant trail.
The Ironton Rail Trail is located at 3219 MacArthur Rd., Whitehall, PA 18037.
