As temperatures cool down, you may find yourself longing for warmer days and sunshine. While Portland in fall and winter may not be able to offer you that, this local shop is serving up kava, a traditional root brewed as a tea that is served all throughout the South Pacific, that will make you feel like you are away from it all.
The shop, Bula Kava House, has been open in Portland since 2011.
Notable as the first kava bar in the city, Bula Kava House has been going strong for over 5 years.
Traditionally served in a coconut shell, kava tea is used medicinally and socially throughout the region where it is native.
Used to holistically manage pain, anxiety and insomnia, kava is thought to be a safer alternative to alcohol or other intoxicants.
The main offering here is its namesake drink kava, made from the root of the shrub native to the South Pacific.
Tea brewed from the kava root has been consumed in this way for over 3,000 years
Drinking a glass of kava from a coconut is the traditional way to partake, and a trip to Bula Kava House will not disappoint.
If you want to brew the tea at home, they have all the supplies to get you started as well.
They also sell kava root for you to take home and prepare yourself.
Sourcing the highest quality of kava from Vanuatu and other South Pacific islands, Bula Kava House has plenty of options to choose.
While you are there you can also catch a bite to eat.
The bright shop serves up a variety of tasty (and healthy) acai bowls with not-so-telling names such as the Super Bowl, Comfort Bowl, and Basic Bowl.
They also have a fresh juice bar and make some pretty amazing smoothies.
The taste of the islands is not just with the kava. Featuring a numbers of blended beverages, you can definitely eat your greens here.
Choose from drinks like the Columbia Cleanse, East Side Elixir, Rose Royce, or Spicy Hipster for some of the best in fresh juice.
To combine the best of both worlds, you can add kava to your juice, smoothie or bowl.
Whatever you choose, this relaxing tea is just what you need to be transported to another place.
The cozy spot is as inviting as any good coffee shop, and serves up some delicious varieties of this medicinal and recreational plant.
Bula Kava House is located at 3115 SE Division Street.
It is open from 11 am to 11 pm from Sunday through Thursday and 11 am to midnight Friday and Saturday.
