The Epic Drive Through Tallgrass Prairie Preserve Is Perfect For A Day Trip Outing In Oklahoma

Feeling the need to get out of the house and take a drive? If so, get the family together and head to Pawhuska to Tallgrass Prairie Preserve – the largest protected remnant of tallgrass prairie left on earth. This epic 15-mile drive is perfect for a day trip outing and we think it’s just what you need during these usual times. Keep scrolling for more details.

The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is home to over 39,000 acres of the largest protected tallgrass prairie in the world.

It is home to a host of wildlife including white-tailed deer, coyotes, and more than 2,000 bison.

There is a Visitor Center and restrooms in the Preserve but please note they are currently closed until further notice due to COVID-19. The good news is, the drive is still open to the public!

Visitors can experience an afternoon prairie picnic, or enjoy the awesome spectacle of an evening sunset in the wide-open spaces.

Enjoy a drive on the scenic route, which takes guests through the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve and through neighboring private ranches. If you take the full drive, you can go as far as 50 miles.

If you take the long route, plan on it taking about two hours to enjoy the drive and a few scenic spots along the route.

This area is a haven for wildlife viewing. Over 2,100 American bison make up one of the largest herds in the country.
