If you're searching for places to visit in Oklahoma this year, we put together a list of charming small towns to visit, one for each month of the year. 1. January - Lone Wolf
One of the best places to relax after the hustle and bustle of the holidays is in Lone Wolf. This sleepy town is home to the Quartz Mountains and the gorgeous Quartz Mountain State Park Lodge. It’s located in a remote area of southwestern Oklahoma on Lake Altus-Lugert and is everything you could dream of and more. You can explore the great outdoors or sit back and relax at the resort that overlooks the lake.
2. February - Broken Bow
The small town of Broken Bow is located in southeastern Oklahoma and is a great vacation spot year-round. In the wintertime, the place is a cozy mountain town that’s perfect for relaxing, winter hiking, exploring, and dining. It’s become quite a popular destination town, especially in the winter. There are thousands of cabins to rent in the area, so during the month of love, there's no better place to snuggle up than in a cozy cabin in Broken Bow.
3. March - Hinton
As spring arrives in Oklahoma, you might be itching to get outdoors and explore. One of the best places to enjoy small-town charm and nature is in Hinton, home to Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park. They offer overnight tent camping or RV sites, so all you adventure seekers will want to visit this incredible nature spot and bask in the beauty of the canyons. There is also lodging in Hinton if you would like modern amenities.
4. April - Medicine Park
Medicine Park is a fun town in Oklahoma that is best known for its quaint, cobblestone streets overlooking the gorgeous Medicine Creek at the edge of the Wichita Mountains in southern Oklahoma. It’s the kind of town where people travel from all over the state to enjoy the charm, character, and scenery not found in other small towns around the Sooner State. You can enjoy shopping, dining, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, and much more. Plus, the weather will be just about perfect in April, which is great for outdoor enthusiasts.
5. May - Carlton Landing
There's no better place to kick off lake season than in Carlton Landing, a beautiful resort community located on the shores of Lake Eufaula in northeastern Oklahoma. It’s modeled after the town of Seaside, Florida so you feel like you’re on a beach vacation when visiting. And, the best part is you don’t have to be a resident to enjoy everything this place offers. They offer vacation rentals for a relaxing getaway for one night or a stay for a week. Either way, you’ll never want to leave this charming lake town.
6. June - Davis
One of the best places to enjoy the summer in Oklahoma is in the small town of Davis. This charming town is home to an abundance of nature, one of which is Turner Falls. Here, you can swim, hike, and enjoy one of the most beautiful spots in the Sooner State. You can rent a cabin in Turner Falls Park or stay in a hotel in town. It's located in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains so the scenery is otherworldly and there is plenty of outdoor recreation for all skill levels.
7. July - Grove
Tucked away in the hills of northeastern Oklahoma is the charming lake town of Grove – a small community that sits on the shores of the spectacular Grand Lake. The setting around this lake town is picture-perfect and one of the most beautiful places in Oklahoma. The town is hopping in July and there's so much to do. From firework shows and entertainment to shopping and boating, there's endless fun to be had in Grove.
8. August - Pawhuska
If you're in need of a place to escape city life, head to Pawhuska, a small town boasting charm, exquisite Oklahoma beauty, and quaint shopping. The first place we recommend you check out is the famous Pioneer Woman Mercantile, a two-story building that houses a restaurant, shop, and bakery. The area is also home to Tallgrass Prairie Preserve and Bluestem Falls.
9. September - Wilburton
People travel to Wilburton to enjoy the beauty of Robbers Cave State Park. September is a great time to enjoy the hues of autumn and the great weather. Camp next to the water or enjoy an overnight stay in the beautiful lodge.
10. October - Talihina
Talihina is a tiny town nestled in the mountains of southern Oklahoma that’s the perfect place to relax. It’s surrounded by astounding beauty, secluded from city life, and known as Oklahoma’s last frontier. It’s widely known as the gateway city to The Talimena Scenic Byway – the most breathtaking drive in the state – and if you’ve never visited this unique place, you’re missing out. The surrounding mountains are full of hiking trails that are not overly crowded. You could set out all day and only run into a few people. Overnight accommodations range from tepees to tents to cabins. Plus, there are several lovely B&Bs and the famous Buffalo Creek Guest Ranch.
11. November - Guthrie
Step back in time during the holiday season in the charming town of Guthrie, Oklahoma. For over 35 years, Guthrie has been putting on an old-fashioned Christmas celebration reminiscent of the Territorial period. The Victorian architecture of the town, along with the celebration’s festivities and decorations, make Guthrie’s Territorial Christmas Celebrations one of the best holiday events in the state. The event starts in November, so it's a great month to experience this magical town that's decorated in an old-fashioned way.
12. December - Sulphur
Sulphur is a quaint and cozy town that goes all out for Christmas with lights and decorations. They were voted the best Christmas town in Oklahoma in 2017 by Cheapism.com so if you're looking for a place to visit during the holiday season, this is your town. Located in the town of Sulphur is The Artesian Hotel, a gorgeous place that really shines during Christmastime. It's really one of the most impressive Oklahoma hotels during the holidays. Visitors will travel all across the state just to enjoy the magic of the season here.
