The Ohio Restaurant With German Roots That Date Back To The 1800s
Moerlein Lager House in Cincinnati is a historic brewpub with Bavarian roots dating back to the early nineteenth century.
Germans were among the first and most prominent European settlers in Ohio. Therefore, you'll find an impressive array of German history throughout the Buckeye State. One must-visit destination that's rich in German heritage is also one of the most popular brewpubs in the state: Moerlein Lager House in Ohio. Located in Cincinnati, this two-story building has Bavarian roots dating back to the early nineteenth century. Here's more on what you can look forward to when you visit this fascinating Ohio destination.
Moerlein Lager House is no hidden gem; it's one of the most popular breweries and restaurants in Downtown Cincinnati. Yet few people realize just how historic this company is.
The year was 1853. The Christian Moerlein Brewing Company was established in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood by a Bavarian immigrant who was passionate about brewing hearty, European-style beers.
These brews were so popular, in fact, that they were frequently exported to regions of Europe and South America.
Moerlein passed away in 1897, and the Prohibition period stopped beer production altogether. In 1981, Moerlein beer was re-introduced to Cincinnati, and became one of the few to adhere to the strict Reinheitsgebot Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.
Upheld to this day, this law insists that there are just four ingredients in the beer: hops, malted barley, yeast, and water. If you're a fan of beer, you'll likely be able to tell the difference!
In addition to its famous beer, Moerlein has also become a popular spot for dining. Whether it's brunch on the weekends or a festive dinner out, this spot is never empty.
So the next time you're curious to experience a little slice of Bavaria right here in Ohio, you'll know exactly where to go.
