Any resident of Ohio knows that the Buckeye State is loaded with natural beauty galore. Lakes, forests, caves, trails: there's virtually an unlimited array of places for nature lovers. There are lots of popular caves in Ohio (Old Man's Cave, anyone?) that are absolutely stunning and totally worth a visit, but there are some real hidden gems as well. One that we're fond of is Chapel Cave.
Chapel Cave is also called 21 Horse Cave because it is rumored to be large enough to hold 21 horses. Fittingly, Chapel Cave is located just off a horseback trail in Rockbridge.
This is a great riding trail, but hikers on foot are welcome also.
The area around the cave is absolutely stunning. You will feel like you're in a completely different universe, far away from the stress and chaos of everyday life. There's something about being out in nature in Ohio that nothing else can compare to.
You'll see so many interesting rock formations in this area! It's amazing to think how many thousands of years this took to create.
There are small waterfalls nearby, though they do sometimes dry up if there hasn't been much rain.
This entire region is truly gorgeous. Between the old-growth forest and the wildlife (it's a birdwatcher's paradise out there!), nature lovers will be in heaven.
The hikes around here can be difficult. It's extremely muddy, and since it is primarily a horse trail, there can be manure to avoid. But the views are assuredly worth the difficulty!
