Take A Horse Drawn Carriage Ride Through Northern California’s Oldest Trees This Holiday Season
If you’ve done a lot of exploring around Northern California, it’s likely you’ve already visited Calaveras Big Trees State Park where giant sequoia trees were first discovered. But have you visited it during winter? Specifically, the park holds an annual event every year in which you can ride in a horse drawn carriage through the park’s famous forest of sequoias. On top of that, the event boasts plenty of holiday cheer in the form of food, music, and tasty drinks. If you’re looking for a unique way to see one of Northern California’s most notable parks then look no further. Winter Wonderland awaits.
The giant sequoias at Calaveras Big Trees State Park are one of the state's old tourist attractions. These awe-inspiring trees are considered the largest trees on earth, and at more than 2,000 years old, they are some of the oldest as well! Seeing these trees should be a bucket list item for everyone but especially during December when you can take a horse drawn carriage ride through them.
Every year, the park holds the Winter Wonderland Carnival. The carnival allows visitors to experience the park in a whole new way, while everything is all covered snow and holiday cheer. There are plenty of festivities to enjoy during the carnival but the main attraction is the authentic horse drawn carriage ride.
Hop into the carriage and prepare to be delighted as the horses lead you through the park's blissful snow-covered meadows and towering forests. This is definitely a unique experience you won't soon forget.
The Winter Wonderland is a great way to spread some holiday joy but it is also a key fundraising event for the park. Tickets to the event and any sales made during the carnival directly benefit the park's educational programs, visitor center, tours, and Junior Ranger programs.
Besides the magical carriage ride among the sequioas, you'll also take part in games, music, and other activities in the Warming Hut. You'll also be able to indulge in hot cocoa, steaming apple cider, delicious popcorn and cookies, and other awesome goodies.
The carnival will take place on the last Saturday in December from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. We're letting you know about this event well in advance since it typically sells out quickly and you'll definitely want to plan ahead.
Don't sweat it if you can't make it to the Winter Wonderland Carnival. The park is a wonderful place to visit all winter long. The Warming Hut and snowshoe tours are also offered throughout the winter months. However, if you'd like to take advantage of a delightful carriage ride then you'll want to snag tickets soon!
Tickets are $12.50 for adults and $8.50 for children under 12. For more information, you can visit the Big Tree Association's website
