Northern California has plenty of old railroad trails that have been converted into walking paths and trails, but there is nothing else anywhere in the world like the abandoned train tunnels on Donner Summit near Truckee. This old route through the mountains is no longer used, and hikers can walk through the tunnels and snow sheds to take in the unique sights.
Most of the tunnels at Donner Summit were built in the 1800s. They cut a path through this rugged mountain environment for trains to cross the Sierra.
Many of the structures, like this rock wall, were built by Chinese Immigrants who were responsible for much of the railroad construction out west.
A newer route was established through the mountains and these tunnels were abandoned years ago.
Today, hundreds of people each year hike through the abandoned tunnels.
If you visit in the winter, the ice makes the tunnels take on a cave-like feeling.
In the summer, however, they offer a shady respite from all the sun.
It's a good idea to bring a flashlight for the longer tunnels.
Don't be surprised to see a lot of graffiti along your walk. It's actually an interesting sight to see on these man made train tunnels.
You can make this into an out and back hike of any length, or continue on the 5.5 mile loop through the mountains.
It's an easy but unique and beautiful hike. There's nowhere else like it in the world.
Not only is Donner Summit one of the most scenic places, the slice of history to explore in these tunnels is fascinating.
It also happens to be a great place to watch the sun slowly slip beneath the horizon.
Have you ever walked through the Donner Summit tunnels? It's a really great experience and we would love to know what you think about this interesting slice of history.
