Folks in the San Francisco Bay Area have always paved the way for grander things to come. From history to politics, culture, food, clothing, and more, breaking the mold is an integral part of the way of life here. That extends to creating new residential communities as well – a great example of which is the transformation of The Presidio into residential housing.
Another new transformed former military base is in the works as well on Yerba Buena Island, which just might set the mark—for better or worse—for historical transformations across the country – The Residences at Yerba Buena Island.
Yerba Buena Island, which sits in the middle of San Francisco Bay between downtown San Francisco and Oakland, its only land entrance via the Bay Bridge, was formerly known as Goat Island, a nod to the original “residents” of the island.
In the 1870s it was reimagined for use as the Pacific Coast’s first U.S. Naval Training Station and served as such during the war efforts and was renamed Yerba Buena Island. The lighthouse here played a major role in the defense of the area. Over the years it also served as an anti-submarine patrol docking station, the West Coast office of Pan American Airways, a Works Progress Administration project, and the site of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, among other uses. Decommissioned by the military decades ago, there have always been vastly different ideas about what to do with the island. Residential development was always strongly opposed - until now.
Accessible by both land and ferry, the views from The Residences at Yerba Buena Island will be nothing short of spectacular.
The entire development of this transformed former military base when completed will encompass 72 acres populated with townhomes, condominiums, flats, and estate residences, as well as exclusive shared community amenities.
Indoor-outdoor living space for entertaining is the focus of the Courtyard Townhomes.
These multi-story roomy residences include a primary home, a private guest house, and private interior courtyards. These are just one of two types of condominium mini-communities to be built here.
Those who enjoy single-floor living can opt for The Flats.

You will find meticulous craftsmanship and expert interior designs in the Bristol Condominiums.

Custom-built single-family residences are offered at the Estate Homesites.
Offering unparalleled views of the Bay, San Francisco skyline, Clipper Cove, and the Golden Gate Bridge, there will only be five homesites available. A pool, wellness and fitness, park, and other lifestyle amenities are part of the residential experience here. And don’t forget those awe-inspiring views of the Golden Gate Bridge to the west, and the downtown San Francisco skyline to the south just across the bay from the Ferry Building.
Whether on Yerba Buena Island during the day or night, the views are stunning.
Parts of the island still contain some of the original historic structures and are open for tourism, so it remains a wonderful destination for Bay Area locals and visitors alike.
