real Wild West, complete with gun-slingin' cowboys and everything. However, Sonora was also extremely prosperous and you can observe this fact in the many historic buildings that are still standing today.
Several historic homes that were constructed in the late 1800s still stand today. Additionally, structures like the Opera House, Tuolumne County Courthouse, and Sonora High School all show that the town's early residents had high hopes for Sonora's future.
In 1986, Sonora was chosen as one of the first "Main Street" cities in California. The National Trust for Historic Preservation and the California Main Street Program worked together with City Council to revitalize Sonora's stunning historic downtown district.
