10 Destinations Everyone In North Dakota Needs To Visit This Summer
Summer weather is already here in North Dakota as the temperatures rise and the sun shines in the prairie sky. It’s time to take the tarps off our boats, campers, and get all of the summer gear out of storage! Start making your summer bucket list by adding these amazing destinations in our legendary state. They will make this year a memorable one, guaranteed.
1. Graham's Island State Park
Devils Lake, the largest natural lake in the state, is always popular with recreation. There is an island in the lake with only one road connected to it for access called Graham's Island. You can go camping, fishing, boating, and many other things right from this beautiful piece of land. It is the perfect summer getaway for anyone looking for some fun in the sun.
2. Little Missouri National Grassland
This huge grassland encompasses a giant chunk of western North Dakota, including both units of the Thedore Roosevelt National Park. The unique landscapes of this grassland make it the ultimate summer destination. There are plenty of trails and campgrounds throughout the grassland that make it perfect for taking advantage of warm weather. Or you could even just drive through it and enjoy it from the road.
3. Missouri River
Take a stroll through Keelboat Park in Bismarck, North Dakota or catch a ride on the Lewis & Clark Riverboat. The mighty Missouri River offers tons of awesome activities through many of the towns it passes by.
4. Fort Union Trading Post
This absolutely awesome historical site near Williston, North Dakota has everything for an unforgettable trip. During the summer when the grass is lush and green and the nearby river is flowing strong, it creates a great place for photography. The history of the place will fascinate you as you walk through the fort and see the impressive structures.
5. Lake Metigoshe
A beautiful lake lies within the Turtle Mountains that will take your breath away. The calm waters reflect the dense forests surrounding it in the most beautiful of ways. Canoes and kayaks are a great way to experience it but you can also simply relax shoreside and get away from it all for a little while.
6. Maah Daah Hey Trail
This impressive trail system takes on challengers from all over the place. Most take it by bike but you can hike the trail as well. There is over 90 miles of trails in the system and they all cross the awe-inspiring terrain of the badlands.
7. Lake Oahe
Crossing the South Dakota border and into North Dakota is the massive lake. Many people enjoy boating, sailing, and fishing on Lake Oahe. During the summer it is perfect for all kinds of lakeside activities.
8. Medora, North Dakota
Medora is one of the top tourist destinations of North Dakota, and for good reason! People from all around the world come here to see this historic little western town and the mesmerizingly gorgeous scenery surrounding it. The famous outdoor Medora Musical only happens during summer, so this is the chance to see it!
9. Cross Ranch State Park
This delightful state park near Washburn, North Dakota has everything you need for the ultimate summer vacation. Camping, both primitive or in fancy yurts or cabins, is popular here. You can surround yourself in the natural settings right along one of the last undeveloped stretches of the Missouri River. It's stunning!
10. Dunseith, North Dakota
The small border town of Dunseith, North Dakota makes for a great day trip destination. It is home to the International Peace Garden, a must see in this state, as well as a few other notable things. The W'eel Turtle, shown above, welcomes people to the town. It is a massive turtle made entirely from tire rims. It's the largest sculpture of its kind. It also is known as the "Gateway to the Turtle Mountains," another great spot for summer fun.
