North Carolina is home to some wild and wacky annual events (the Bigfoot Festival in Marion is the newest addition), but the 13th Annual Great Sapphire Outhouse Races are not to missed. The event takes place this upcoming weekend on February 16th at Sapphire Valley Ski Area in Sapphire. Here’s the scoop on this fun event:
It all started 13 years ago when someone had the zany idea to create an event featuring hand-crafted outhouses (complete with toilet seats!) on top of a pair of skis — and then race them in a daring downhill competition!
The resulting races have become notoriously fun for spectators who...
... both wait for crashes and hope they don't happen! Afterall, sitting in a toppling outhouse that is moving seems like it would be a nightmare.
Spectators come from all over the Southeast to get a look at the creative outhouses in the race. They can be built of anything, even cardboard!
Some are quite elaborate!
Would you ever ride an outhouse on skis in a downhill race?
It seems a little daring, perhaps even dangerous!

The event takes place at Sapphire Valley Ski Area on Saturday, February 16, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission to view the event is free!
Sapphire Valley Ski Area is located at 127 Cherokee Tr., Sapphire Valley, NC 28774. Learn more on their official website !
