Sure, National Doughnut Day might now be a figment of our memory, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate this tasty dessert every day. While North Carolina is known for Krispy Kreme, another small, more obscure donut shop located near sandy shores and barefoot beachgoers could possibly have the internationally known sensation beat.
Of course I'm talking about the insanely delicious Britts Donuts. Located on Carolina Beach, the donut (and delicious glaze) have been satisfying taste buds since 1939.
The delicious donuts came to be when the Britts and Wrights opened up a small donut shop on Carolina Beach. The glazed sensation has had lines out the door ever since opening day. Hot, gooey, and ready for a bite - many people drive across the state for one taste of Britts Donuts.
Many people say the glaze is what makes Britts donuts so amazing. But even after Bobby Nivens (a long time employee) bought the business in 1974, the tightly-guarded recipe has remained the top secret to what makes Britts SO delicious. Nivens and his family have been the heart and soul of Britts, with he, his wife, and daughter being familiar faces behind the counter.
During the peak of the summer...you might find yourself waiting for quite some time in line.
And once you get inside you'll be even more antsy for that glazed deliciousness. Don't forget to bring cash with you - this Carolina Beach landmark goes old school...but would you expect anything less? You can tell who's been here before and who's a first timer - all in the way they order their donuts. There's nothing but glazed here, so asking for creme filled or sprinkles might as well have you turning around for the nearest chain donut shop. No, Britts keeps their donuts simply delicious.
While the wait is long, once you get that hot and gooey half dozen...it's TOTALLY worth it. You can't get just one!
Start your day with a coffee and a donut (or a dozen). They open at 8:30 AM...and getting there early ensures your BEST chance for dodging a long wait. You can't beat a donut after catching a Carolina Beach sunrise.
Or pop in for a quick afternoon snack. Yum!
Or you can always take it to go and enjoy it with a seaside view. Now that sounds like heaven!
I spy a lot of half-eaten donuts in these pictures, which means one thing: you really can't resist the deliciousness of Britts! If you're craving a gooey glazed donut, make sure to get it now - Britts is closed during the late fall and winter.
Are they your favorite donuts in North Carolina? Have you been here before?
