Every state comes with a handful of risks, well really, life comes with a handful of risks. But the scary danger doesen’t mean we find North Carolina is any less appealing…there’s just these fifteen little things we sometimes have to deal with…
Living seaside comes with a number of risks, most notably hurricanes. While several dozen have taken their toll on the NC coastline, we all remember Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
2. Falling Rocks
In western North Carolina, rock slides frequently occur. Sometimes they even block off whole highways!
3. Scary wildlife
Three types of rattlesnakes are found in North Carolina, further emphasizing the saying "look before you step." Also, not to mention black bears, although usually not aggressive, are still a threat. We have alligators, snakes, spiders...all the terrifying wildlife loves North Carolina too!
4. Ice storms
In the winter months, North Carolina is not shy to some pretty serious ice storms. Some have left residents without power for days. While others have left tree limbs hanging heavy over houses. Ice storms can be very dangerous in North Carolina.
No matter the time of year, flooding is always a scary subject. Especially during hurricanes when rainstorms take no discretion to which part of the state they choose to hammer.
While there's that whole "southerners can't handle the snow joke" sometimes we really can't! Without proper equipment, most Northern states have to clear the streets as best they can. We're usually left with only the option to stay inside a few days and wait it out. In Western NC, snow storms and blizzards are actually quite frequent.
Swimming off the North Carolina coast is all fun and games until you spot a fin in the water...then you start hearing "do do do do" in your head as you plot your hypothetical, jaws like death.
8. Rip currents
Speaking of beachside horrors, the rip current is one to fear! Before you know it, you're pulled out to sea trying to swim against the current. Mom was right, never go above the knees on an awfully wind-filled day.
9. The mysterious black panther
While our football team is called "The Panthers" the days of these elusive creatures roaming our landscape has been said to be long gone. But, that doesen't dispute the copious amounts of reports of black, large cats in the woods, and sometimes as far east as the coast. My question--what exactly is the creature, and if it were to appear, would it really attack a human?
10. Duke and or Carolina fans
Whatever your respective side, keep your friends close, and your enemy down by at least four points in the second half.
11. People who don't like barbeque
It is a seriously unexplainable phenomena, but stay away, very far away.
12. Not obeying old wives' tales and or folklore from the North Carolina mountains
Don't eat the last slice of bread...you'll be unmarried and alone forever!
13. Ghosts, demon dogs, witches, scorned pirates, phantom hitchhikers, sirens, late rich estate owners
Anything you can muster up in the dark side of your imagination, North Carolina has a story for. From sirens to ghosts to demon dogs that chase your car, we're a state filled with legend and whose to say which ones are true?
During parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway, it seems if your car were to make one wrong turn, or one anxious squirrel darted in front, you'd fly down about 3,000 feet. Well, heights are something to be feared here. But luckily it's a good place to overcome that fear as well.
15. People who don't like North Carolina
I don't understand you, and that scares me. You're saying you don't like mountains, waterfalls, nice people, great food, beaches....RUN!
While some are silly, and some are for real, there’s definitely some risk and a few things to fear when living in this state. What would you add to this list? Tell me in the comments!
