While New York may be commonly associated with having some of the world's best and biggest cities, you'll also find that so many people love calling our state home because of its rural regions. Taking you away from the city's chaos and all of the major light pollution, some of the Empire State's most secluded areas will have a front-row seat to the 2020 Lyrid Meteor Shower. If you're ready for a reason to look up into our beautiful night sky, then mark your calendar because this celestial event is right around the corner!
Coming to the night sky this spring, the Lyrid meteor shower is due to put on a show between April 16 and 25.
To those of our New Yorkers who call our most rural spaces home or have ventured to areas in our state like this before, you already know we've had an impressive viewing of other meteor showers - but none quite like this.
During the Lyrid meteor shower this spring, surges of over 100 meteors are expected to been seen within an hour but more commonly though you'll be able to spot about 10 to 15 outside of the surges.
Considering the fact that the meteor shower is set to take place throughout the course of over a week, you may be wondering when the best time to view this event is. Well, according to the experts that will be in the darkest hours before dawn on April 22.
Around New York State, this spring you'll be able to find many local observatories hosting viewing events for the Lyrid meteor shower - with the South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center being just one of them!
A meteor shower that has a more than 2,000-year long history with Earth's night skies, this is one free event put on by Mother Nature that you won't want to miss out on seeing this year.
