For those looking to hit the trails in upstate New York this winter, the Catskills are some of the best mountains in the Northeast to enjoy all four seasons of the year in all their glory. Even when it comes to winter hiking, this is a spot you don't want to miss. The Giant Ledge and Panther Mountain Trail is one of the most popular trails in the region. Once you reach Giant Ledge and are looking out over the Catskills, you'll understand why that is.
This beautiful trail up Panther Mountain to Giant Ledge is one of the most popular hikes in the region and rewards hikers with some of the most breathtaking scenery in the state.
The 7.1-mile trail takes on a new kind of beauty each season, and an exploration of this trail in the winter is no less gorgeous. Snowshoe the trail this winter, and you'll feel like you've entered a dream.
For those interested in more of a challenge, continue up the trail past Giant Ledge to summit Panther Mountain, which is around two miles and 1,000 vertical feet beyond Giant Ledge.
Panther Mountain is 3,720 feet tall, the 18th highest mountain in the Catskills and a mountain included in the Catskill 3500 Club, members of which must climb all 35 Catskill High Peaks.
Come fall, the views of the mountain range from this trail are absolutely stunning. You'll feel like you could relax and soak in the scenery from Giant Ledge for hours.
The trail starts just off Country Road 47 in Shandaken, New York. Visitors have access to a parking area right next to the trail.
While the hike is much colder in the winter, it's still one of the best winter hiking options for those who want to enjoy some snowy views. If you've never been snowshoeing before, this is the ideal landscape to do it.
Slide Mountain neighbors Panther Mountain, so if you're looking to get a few more hours of hiking in, hit the Slide Mountain Trail for 6.3 miles of adventure. This trail is recommended for use from May to October.
