New York’s Erie Canal Is Getting A $300 Million Dollar Makeover And Here’s All That’s To Come
If you’ve been paying attention to any major announcements that Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has been making so far this year, then you’ve already heard about the fact that the Governor’s 29th proposal for 2020 is a $300 million dollar makeover for our state’s Erie Canal. While all $300 million dollars won’t be spent at once, the Governor has proposed an official plan to transform this historic piece of our state over a 5-year period. If you’re wondering what exactly is planned for the Erie Canal, then see what plans have been drawn up so far that already has us in awe.
With the proposal's 1st Phase set to spread more than $100 million dollars across our Erie Canal, New York's 'Reimagine the Canals' project is set to transform pieces of our history in ways like never before.
1. Adopting Industrial Property For New Uses
For those who hadn’t already heard the news, the winner of the Reimagine the Canals competition was a design for a canalside pocket neighborhood in Canastota. Something new that will be developed along the Old Erie Canal, the new neighborhood is set to demonstrate a new model for canalside living for modern times.
2. Expanding Water Recreation
Out along Cayuga Lake, a new whitewater destination is coming to New York State. Right near Seneca Falls, the whitewater oasis will use existing water control infrastructure to create a water sports course. The goal of this exciting, new whitewater destination is to help increase the Empire State’s eco-tourism and the number of visitors that visit this area of New York.
3. Connecting Communities
The new ‘Brockport Loop’ will connect SUNY Brockport to the Empire State Trail, as well as the village of Brockport. A former canal guard-gate will be transformed into a pedestrian bridge and overlook, something that everyone in the local area is incredibly excited about.
4. Celebrating Iconic Infrastructure
Some of New York’s movable dams will have new interactive, hydro-powered illumination that’s set to light up the night. An electrifying way to celebrate the Erie Canal’s history, there’s currently nothing else like this in New York State.
5. Developing Destination Accommodations
Along the Mohawk River in Amsterdam, Guy Park Manor will transform into something new with the Reimagine the Canals project. Transforming into a new hospitality destination, a pedestrian bridge will be built across the canal lock to create something new in this area of New York.
