The Land of Enchantment is full of some of America’s richest history, but there are few places you can see it firsthand. Over a million years ago, a natural force of nature happened, but what’s left behind is truly astounding. This supervolcano preserve is the only of its kind in the state, and it offers so much to do and see.
Over a million years ago, a volcano erupted in what is now Jemez Springs, New Mexico.
This volcanic site is known for its glorious meadows, mountains, and abundant wildlife. After the eruption, the ground sank inward, creating an incredibly luscious landscape.
As for things to do at the preserve, there are many hiking trails, camping spots, fishing sites, streams, and tons of wildlife to see. Whether it be elk or prairie dogs, there are so many animals. If you get here early enough, you'll see one of the largest elk herds in the state.
Make sure to bring your camera to capture this raw, rough landscape. It's a truly jaw-dropping sight. There are many tours available hosted by knowledgeable rangers, as well.
