Looking for an escape this weekend? How does a tiny, rustic town surrounded by natural beauty sound to you? If those sound ideal, then you’ll want to pay a visit to Eagle Nest. Located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico, this little village has a population that barely reaches 300. Combine that with its fairly isolated location and a laidback atmosphere, and this will be a destination you’ll visit again and again.

Welcome to Eagle Nest, your new favorite weekend getaway destination.
Stop by the Enchanted Circle Gateway Museum, located inside a rustic log cabin. Admission is free and inside you'll find exhibits that feature the village's cultural and historical roots.
The main attraction for Eagle Nest is quite simply the natural views surrounding it.
The village sits in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and is surrounded by a lovely forested area. Eagle Nest Lake State Park sits nearby, a perfect spot for boating, fishing, or even just enjoying the view.
There are also plenty of hiking trails in the areas surrounding the town.
One of our favorite trails is Clear Creek Trail, located about 6.5 miles east of Eagle Nest. This trail follows a creek and will lead you to multiple waterfalls in a lush environment.
This brewery is located inside a cozy log cabin and sits just outside town with a fantastic view of the mountains. Here, you can sample their small-batch brews, which range from the malty Homestead Amber Ale to the bold Touch-Me-Not IPA.
One fantastic place to book a night or two is at Laguna Vista Resort, conveniently located right along the village main street. You can opt to sleep in a room in the lodge or in one of the small cabins for a more rustic experience.
Eagle Nest is located 31 miles east of Taos and 99 miles northeast of Santa Fe.
Want to head a little further south for your next getaway? If you still want to pay a visit to a small town, check out Socorro. Located about an hour south of Albuquerque, it’s a dusty little town with some amazing history. Read more in The Historic Small Town That Every New Mexican Should Visit At Least Once.
