New Mexico’s best-kept secrets tend to off the beaten path. That’s certainly the case with one of our most picturesque breweries. Comanche Creek Brewing Company isn’t even in the tiny Northern New Mexico town of Eagle Nest – home to a scant 290 people. It’s two miles beyond the town (which is pictured below).
The brewery is on a private ranch, at the end of a gravel road. Don’t worry – there are signs to guide you.
Upon arrival, you’ll discover a tiny historic cabin…
…And views like this.
Nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this hidden spot is at an altitude of 8400 feet. You can admire the towering Wheeler Peak and Touch-Me-Not Mountain, a peak of 12,041 feet, from the property.
A petite stream - Comanche Creek – gives the brewery its name.
This micro-brewery is a family-run operation. It honors the family’s heritage and also the surrounding land.
This quaint cabin was built by the great grandfather of the brewery’s founder.
And as for the influence of the land, you’ll see that reflected in the names of the beers, such as the Touch-Me-Not IPA. The Homestead Amber Ale takes its moniker from the cabin, and Creekside Blond from the stream.
In fact, the beers here are produced using clear mountain water from New Mexico. It doesn’t get more local - or pristine - than that.
The beer is made in small batches. Since there are only a few taps, the selection rotates; there are seasonal specials. The Homestead Amber Ale is bottled, so that’s always available. It’s an old German style beer, that’s on the malty side.
Tastings are very affordable, and a good way to decide whether you’re in the mood for a dark brown ale like Ol’ Smokey, or something like the hoppy Deadman Pale Ale.
Settle down on the patio, where you can take full advantage of the views. Even in cooler weather, there are heaters to keep you cozy.
The setting is so serene.
This miniscule yet mighty brewery is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
If a detour down the road less traveled appeals, then head to 225 Comanche Creek Road in Eagle Nest. For directions or more information, visit the brewery’s website .
