This wildlife site has been preserving the wetlands and the animals within since 1937, and after you take a trip to this amazing spot and see the numerous birds, ducks, coyotes, and so much more, you'll truly be in awe of all that raw New Mexico nature has to offer.
Welcome to Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge! This nature preserve in Roswell is one of the best ways to view all of the beautiful wildlife that the Land of Enchantment has to offer.
This breathtaking wildlife site lies upon the banks of the Pecos River. The preserve was established in 1937 to be a safe haven for migratory birds and other rare species of wildlife.
The water itself upon Bitter Lake is quite shallow, and even dries up completely for part of the year. No matter the time you visit, though, there's sure to be unending beauty.
Depending on the time of year you visit, you'll find many cranes, snow geese, and other native birds. This refuge is also home to many rare fish, and over 90 species of dragonflies.
This wildlife site offers many events throughout the year including the annual Dragonfly Festival. This year it's taking place on September 7th.
If you visit the Visitor Center, there are plenty of refuge staff and volunteers who will be willing to answer any wildlife questions you may have. There are also restrooms in the Visitor Center.
Whether you're an avid bird watcher, or just want to immerse yourself in one of New Mexico's most lively natural oases, this wildlife site is absolutely astonishing.

Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located at 4200 E. Pine Lodge Rd., Roswell, NM. The Visitor Center is open from 8a.m. to 4p.m., Monday through Friday, and some select Saturday's.
