Whether you’re a local or an out-of-towner, you’ll agree that there’s no better way to see the state!
At 77 feet in height, this cascade in Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park is doubtlessly one of the loveliest waterfalls in New Jersey. In fact, it's one of the largest waterfalls in the U.S.! It was formed during the most recent ice age, and it has stunned human visitors ever since. There is archaeological evidence showing that indigenous tribes settled nearby, and who could blame them? This site stuns visitors to this day. There's no better spot to start your New Jersey road trip!
2. Bridal Veil Falls in North Haledon

William Paterson College has a bragging right few institutions have: it has a waterfall. Bridal Veil Falls is actually located on its property, and this cascade has a well-trekked path leading to it. In fact, the path dips into a cave right behind the waterfall. This pretty-as-a-picture spot is a true natural work of art.
3. Ventimiglia Vineyard in Wantage
Ventimiglia Vineyard, 101 Layton Rd, Wantage, NJ 07461, USA
In 2008, Ventimiglia Vineyard opened to the public... and it was a hit! Located on 50 acres of Rocky Ridge Farm, this cherished family vineyard is open Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m., closing at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and at 4 p.m. on Sundays. Outdoor tastings at this hidden gem are always memorable... especially since it is one of the only wineries in New Jersey to produce select types of wine, like Sumoll and Carignan wines, which are traditionally produced in Spain.
It’s easy to spend a few hours exploring the waterfalls, and a few unwinding at the winery. If you’re ready to turn in for the night and refresh for another day of wine and waterfall-filled fun, you can swing by the Best Western Hunt’s Landing Hotel Matamoras / Milford for a comfy stay. Loosen up in their swimming pool after dinner, then fuel up on a complimentary breakfast before you head out the next morning!
4. Buttermilk Falls in Layton
Buttermilk Falls, Mountain Rd, Layton, NJ 07851, USA
This beauty is one of the longest-stretching cascades in New Jersey. Buttermilk Falls has a set of stairs leading to its peak but, truth be told, you can enjoy the cascade just as much from its base. The trek from the parking lot is a bit strenuous, but it's well worth it if you can manage it. This waterfall is, admittedly, a bit touristy... so plan to visit early in the day if you want to beat the crowd.
Now, this spot is a true hidden gem. Silver Spray Falls is hidden in the expanse of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and it's a bit hard to find. Walk up Mountain Road from the Buttermilk Falls lot, and keep your eyes peeled for an unmarked trail. It's hidden about half a mile away from the Buttermilk Falls lot, and it's pretty short. Once you hear the sound of Flat Creek, you'll know you're at the right spot. This isn't a frequently visited spot due to its isolation, so you just might have this stunning view all to yourself.
Van Campens Glen Falls is something of a hidden gem, though it's significantly less hidden than Silver Spray Falls. Also located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, this beauty can be accessed along a trail that stretches for about a mile. The trail is easy to hike, and the payoff is almost unbelievable.
7. Brook Hollow Winery in Columbia

Now that you've spent all day exploring, you'll probably be ready to unwind. Brook Hollow Winery in Columbia is truly wine in a million — er, one in a million. It opens daily at noon, but Fridays are the best time to visit. After all, that's a $10 meal deal and live music night! (Saturdays and Sundays have live music, too, but... $10 meal deals! Who can pass that up?) Special events like barbecues and comedy nights are common here, too, and the surrounding landscape is beautiful.
Located in Black River Park is a different sort of waterfall. Half Moon Falls is man-made, like many features across the 560-acre park. This area historically hosted mills and an old iron mine, and evidence of human impact is all over the park. In fact, there's even a waterfall rushing over rock ruins further in the park... but that might have to be an adventure for another time. We have an itinerary to keep!
You've just stumbled upon one of the most darling wineries in the state. The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., though the courtyard opens just a bit later. With more than 50 home-grown wines for you to try, it's no wonder this winery is so popular with locals! Reservations are recommended for this cool local spot.
10. Alba Vineyard & Winery in Milford

We've visited several waterfalls in a day, so why not swing by a second winery on this portion of the trip? Be prepared to be blown away by sweeping views of a verdant landscape! The food here is delicious but, truly, these views take center stage during every visit. The winery opens up at 11 a.m. each day, though closing time varies throughout the week. To add something special to your visit, you might consider a private tour and tasting. It's truly an unforgettable experience!
12. Buttermilk Falls in Mendham Township

If you're feeling ready to squeeze in one more waterfall visit, rouse your designated driver and head over to Buttermilk Falls in Mendham Township. Yes, another Buttermilk Falls, and totally different from the last! The path to the falls is designated with signs, and once you hit the old stone fireplace, you'll know that you're almost there. Once you reach the waterfall, you'll be treated to the sweet sound of rushing water and a stunning view.
There’s so much to do in New Jersey, though it might seem like a tiny place at first glance. You’ll find endless beauty and rich flavor at these waterfalls and wineries, so don’t forget to bring your camera!
