Lockatong Preserve Is A Waterfall Hike In Hunterdon County, New Jersey

Did you know that a little-known rocky creek and waterfall are preserved in the heart of Hunterdon County? Visit the Lockatong Preserve, in Stockton, and you’ll be transported to a whole other world.

The area around New Jersey's Lockatong Creek was early inspiration for the Hunterdon Land Trust project, which was founded in 1996. The Trust focuses on preserving natural resources and landscapes in New Jersey and protecting them from development.

Thanks to the hard work of the Hunterdon Land Trust, today the Lockatong Preserve contains more than 250 acres of pristine woodlands, protecting both pine trees and hardwood trees, rocky outcroppings, many species of wildlife, historic sites, and some of the prettiest views in the entire county.

Miles of marked trails have blazed pathways for hikers to get up close with this freshwater stream that carves its way towards the Delaware River, and the preserve is a scenic spot to spend the day.

The trail network that loops throughout the park makes up just under 4 miles, with a few side spur trails that take hikers to overlooks and down to the riverbanks.

Along the way, you'll pass meadows that have been developed as songbird habitat, tree restoration areas, dozens of native plants, and plenty of spaces where you can watch frogs, toads, turtles, and other critters make themselves at home.

There's even a small natural waterfall along the creek! While many of New Jersey's cascade trails are packed with nature lovers trying to catch a glimpse of a waterfall, the Lockatong Preserve is one of the most serene areas of the state - chances are, you'll have it mostly to yourself.
