This 49-Mile Drive Is the Best Way to See New Jersey's Stunning Coast

New Jersey has hundreds of miles of coastline; from the Hudson, to the Delaware, to the Atlantic Ocean, we’re surrounded by water. As a peninsula, our geography affords us some spectacular views. To experience the beauty of the Delaware, our northern forests and the Kittatinny Mountains, take a drive down Old Mine Road. To take in our stunning shoreline, there’s no road better than Ocean Drive.
Ocean Drive is a stretch of road that runs between Cape May and Atlantic City.
It changes names several times but you'll know you're on the right road as long as you "follow the gulls." There will be sea gull signs guiding you along the way. At 50.8 miles, this drive can be made in a day but I'd definitely break it into two or three to see all the attractions along the way.
Your journey will start (or end) in Cape May. There's so much to see and do in this charming town that you might never want to leave. Visit the Cape May Lighthouse, take a history trolley tour, whale watch, grab breakfast at the Mad Batter or ice cream sandwiches at Peace Pie... Be sure to enjoy the architecture, as well.
Cross over Bennett Creek and head toward Wildwood. Delight in the Doo Wop style buildings and be sure to ride on the giant oceanfront ferris wheel. Play some games at Morey's Piers and be sure to stop at Remember When Retro Arcade & Pinball Palace. Head to the back for "Fascination" - one of my favorite games.
Drive through marshes and over Nummy Island to get to Stone Harbor. You'll find fantastic shops, delicious dining options and a small, local museum that's worth a visit. Don't forget to stop and relax at the beach - you'll find this area a bit more relaxed than Cape May and Wildwood. Don't miss the beautiful bird sanctuary!
Head through Avalon and into Sea Isle City, another laid-back shore town with wonderful shopping and dining. They also have a smaller museum with free walking tours worth checking out.
Ocean City is the perfect destination for family fun. A dry town (you won't find liquor stores here), it's less about partying and more about wholesome entertainment. Play a round of mini-golf or games at Gillian's Wonderland Pier.
If you're looking to drink, dance, gamble or take in a show, this is the place for you. However, it also offers an aquarium, the Absecon Lighthouse, IMAX Theater, shopping, dining and endless arcades. There's really something for everyone.
I can imagine a better way to enjoy the shore. While the trip is short (just around 50 miles), you’ll need to plan for shore traffic and all the fantastic things to see and do along the way. Stop and spend the night anywhere you wish but be sure to bring cash – Ocean Drive is a toll road without EZPass. For a map and directions, click here.
