A Night At This Unique New Hampshire Resort Will Take You Back In Time

It might be hard to believe, but there was actually a time when we didn’t have social media and television to distract us. The photos we shared were done so by handing a copy over to a friend and stories were told by sharing books. While those days might seem like a distant memory, there was some wonderful simplicity in times like that and we miss it. That’s why when we heard that this New Hampshire resort harvests ice the old fashioned way, we couldn’t resist sharing it with you!

Rockywold Deephaven Camps, located in Holderness, has been operating since 1897.

Today, Rockywold Deephaven Camps is a beloved place for folks from far and away to enjoy the summer.

The cottages here are lovely and offer a mix of upscale rustic living with well-appointed cabins.

There's nothing like enjoy the summer in the woods from your own screened in porch.

And waking up among the trees is an experience everyone should have.

But what we truly appreciate about Close Rockywold Deephaven Camps is the resort's devotion to ice. Yes, ice.

Every year when the ice on the lake off of Deephaven becomes about 11 inches thick, the annual ice harvest takes place.

Most of the people involved in the harvest have been doing this for decades and many are following in the footsteps of New Hampshire generations that came before them.

Together, over the course of a week, they remove about 200 tons of ice from the lake and move it into two different ice houses.

Here they'll sit covered in sawdust until it's time to be moved into the antique iceboxes found in each cabin.

The ice blocks weigh between 120 and 150 pounds, so you can imagine that this is no easy job.

But, while over the years people have considered changing to electric refrigerators nobody seems ready to abandon this tradition.

In fact, in 1967 the resort bought a few and offered them to guests. Not a single one was claimed. And so, the annual ice harvest continues, upholding a way of life that began all the way back when Rockywold Deephaven Camps first opened their doors.
