As Halloween gets closer and closer, we've been on the lookout for as many spine tingling tales as possible. The best are those that have ties to history right here in our own backyard, which is exactly what we found in this haunting tale. Dating back to the 1740s, this might be the scariest New Hampshire ghost story you'll hear this Halloween.
The Country Tavern in Nashua is a great place for warm, hearty meals. We love it and know that it’s a favorite among locals and those passing through town.
Along with great food and ambience, there’s some history that can’t go without a mention.
Not just any history. This is one of the spookiest ghost stories from New Hampshire.
The Country Tavern can be found in a farmhouse that was once occupied by a colonial family dating back to the 1740s. Today, people report seeing and feeling the spirit of a colonial woman whose story is one of jealousy and eventually, murder.
The home was built by Captain Ford in 1741. It was occupied primarily by his much younger wife, Elizabeth. Because the Captain was often out at sea for extended periods, Elizabeth is said to have often been lonely.
After one particularly long period away, the captain came home to find that his wife had given birth. Knowing he’d been gone for at least a year, the captain realized that Elizabeth had been with another man. In a jealousy-fueled rage, he killed the baby.
When Elizabeth learned what had happened, she came after her husband. Being stronger, Captain Ford stabbed Elizabeth, throwing her body into the well behind the house.
The story should end there. It doesn’t.
People in the restaurant have reported seeing Elizabeth wandering throughout the house, searching high and low for her lost baby.
Some employees have reportedly seen kitchen utensils and dishes moving around without anyone around. Others have simply reported an eerie presence, as if someone is nearby and watching them while they work.
If you’re curious, stop by the restaurant for dinner. See if you can sense anything out of the ordinary. Many people simply enjoy their meals and leave, with nothing strange to report. Maybe you’ll be one of the lucky few who encounter a sad, lonely Elizabeth.
