Oh, New Hampshire. Your beauty is unsurpassed. Your mountains are incredible. And there's nothing better than waking up to experience it all first-hand. If you're lucky enough to live in the mountains with a great view at all times, consider yourself lucky. For everyone else, this mountain lodge in New Hampshire will enthrall you. But, there's more to it than just incredible views. There's some pretty great history at this lodge!
The Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa is located in the heart of the White Mountains and it's rich with history.
The story of its start, back in 1865, is wonderful and it proves that you never know when opportunity will come knocking.
As the story goes, two travelers heading to Boston from Montreal faced being stranded when their stagecoach overturned en route. The driver suggested they go to a nearby farmhouse in the small town of Whitefield to find lodging for the night.
The owners of the farmhouse, William and Mary Jane Dodge, gladly let them stay overnight.
While the travelers had initially been eager to get to Boston, after just one night with the Dodge couple they changed their plans. Why? The view! The first sight of the mountains was so incredible that they soon chose to stay a week in the small town.
The very next year, in 1866, the inn officially opened and the family made their first addition to the home. And, less than ten years later, a three-story building replaced the original farmhouse.
Between 1884 and 1919 the Dodges expanded the hotel to create an entire resort complex.
In 1986, the hotel closed for nearly 20 years after it was sold to a management company. It re-opened in 2002 as a version of the incredible, sprawling masterpiece that exists today.
While the resort has huge history, the rooms and shared spaces are decidedly contemporary, clean and simple.
And views are maximized with large windows that showcase the incredible surrounding mountains.
In addition to bright, sunny spaces you'll find cozy nooks to enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet.
The original house was a a working farm and today, visitors can still visit the Mountain View Farm.
There's an herb and vegetable garden on-site, as well as sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, and angora rabbits.
Along with these hints of history, visitors will find modern activities such as summertime "dive-in" movies from the pool.
It's easy to spend days here just looking at the mountains and imagining how things were back in the early days.
Visit in the winter for even more quiet and a totally different view of the White Mountains.
No matter when you visit, you'll find that being in the New Hampshire mountains is one of the best ways to re-connect with friends, family and yourself.
And if you listen closely, you just might hear the sounds of dancing shoes from way back when.
