The Comstock Firemen's Museum is a free museum that's open seasonally from May through October. During this time you can stop by anytime between 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a rare glimpse at the history and heritage of firefighting.
This unique museum is definitely small, but you'll find that it's absolutely filled with the finest collection of antique fire equipment and artifacts. It's definitely a fascinating look at how far firefighting has come over the years!
The museum was initially founded in 1979 by Virginia City's volunteer fire department, Liberty Engine Company No. 1, which is still a volunteer firefighting unit to this day. The museum focuses on featuring artifacts that relate to the history of firefighting, specifically in the Comstock and throughout Nevada.
The collection at this small museum is surprisingly large, and contains authentic equipment dating back to 1839. While perusing the firemen's museum you'll see artifacts and technology ranging from the state's early "bucket brigades" all the way to steam powered fire engines.
Virginia City is no stranger to fires. In fact, the Great Fire of 1875 destroyed the majority of town and resulted in a catastrophic amount of damage. Simply put, firefighting is an important part of Virginia City's history and this quaint museum definitely reflects that.
As previously mentioned, admission to the Comstock Firemen's Museum is free of charge. Although, donations are definitely encouraged in order to keep preserving and adding to the museum and the amazing artifacts it contains.
