Located just a 60-minute drive to the east of Reno and Carson City, you’ll find yourself in the charmingly splendid old west town of Fallon, Nevada. “This is one hidden cave!” Those were the memorable words spoken by Mark Harrington, the man who first discovered the Hidden Cave at Grimes Point Archaeological Site. The cave is a popular spot for history lovers and those interested in the past.
Though no one is thought to have lived in the cave, it served as a kind of storage room for what would become treasured Archaic artifacts today. The cave has been excavated many times and discoveries include burial sites, latrines, and even petroglyphs. Hike or take a guided tour to experience this prehistoric location for yourself.
Hidden Cave is less than a fifteen-minute drive from downtown Fallon off of Lincoln Highway.
If you don’t feel like dusting off those hiking boots just yet, grab your camera and head to Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. Explore Nevada’s wetlands with nearly eighty-thousand acres of protected land.
Find bird species you won’t see elsewhere at this pristine natural wonder. See if you can spot American white pelicans or Double-crested cormorants as more than 280 species of birds call this shoreline home.
When it’s time to head back indoors, settle for a glass of award-winning whiskey from Frey Ranch Farmers + Distillery in Fallon, Nevada. The fifth-generation family-run establishment is a world-class experience in fine liquors.
