One of the greatest perks of living in Nevada is coming across historic sites that give us insight into our state's fascinating history. Nevada is the type of state that is extremely proud of its history, so getting glimpses of our unique past is always exciting. Did you know you can tour one of the oldest and richest mining camps in the Silver State? Looking at it, it doesn't look like this place has changed one bit since its mining days. It really is like getting into a time machine and transporting yourself to the 1800s. If you're looking for a unique day trip, consider visiting one of the most amazing places in all of Nevada—Eldorado Canyon.
Eldorado Canyon is one of the most unique places in Nevada, if not the entire country. It was here that mining really took off in the Silver State during the 1850s. Today, you can tour the living ghost town where so much wealth was discovered.
Less than an hour outside of Las Vegas is the Techatticup Mine, located in the small township of Nelson. The town may be quiet now, but back in the day this was one of the most dangerous, yet exciting, places to be.
You won't believe your eyes upon entering the town. It's incredible how this place still looks like the authentic Old West mining town it once was. In fact, the town is so convincing that it's made several TV appearances, most notably a cameo in the movie "3000 Miles to Graceland".
You can see for yourself what it was like to be a miner back during the Gold Rush era. Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours offers in-depth walking tours of the most famous mine in Nevada, The Techatticup Mine.
The tour is approximately a quarter mile long and takes guests down into the mine that made a huge mark on Nevada's history. See with your own eyes the veins where millions of dollars worth of gold and silver was extracted. Pricing is just $15 for adults and $10 for kids.
The mine is spectacular, but it's the surrounding mining camp that really immerses you. It's crazy to think that this was one of the most dangerous places in Nevada at one point in time. The remote area made it easy for lawlessness to run rampant.
Strolling through the abandoned town truly feels like strolling through history. A massive amount of money was made here thanks to the Techatticup Mine, but at the price of the Wild West's brutal violence. This is definitely an incredible piece of history that every Nevadan should experience.
