The humble town of Elko in Northern Nevada is super rich in history and stories of the Old West, so it only makes sense that it's home to an old-fashioned department store known as Elko General Merchandise, or Anacabe's Store.
Owned and operated by the Anacabe family, the store first opened on its Idaho Street location in downtown Elko in 1936. Amazingly enough, it's stayed there ever since. Much of Elko has definitely changed over the past century, but this old-style store has stayed almost exactly the same.
The ranching industry has always played a prominent role in the Elko community, so stores specializing in cowboy gear became a necessity. Anacabe's Store became many rancher's go-to spot for durable work clothing and shoes, and it still is.
In a way, this means Elko General Merchandise is far from your average general store. It's a piece of living Elko history. To this day, you can stop by and pick up some steel-toed boots or some long-lasting blue jeans. However, ranching gear isn't the only thing they sell.
