Not many people travel all the way to the northeastern ghost town of San Jacinto, Nevada these days. It’s a wide stretch of rugged terrain set against mountains and not a whole lot more. However, back in the early 1900s, the San Jacinto was home to a railroad station, post office, and more. While there isn’t much left of the settlement, San Jacinto made its mark in history as it experienced the coldest temperature recorded to date! A trip to the northern part of the state will reward travelers with snowy mountain peaks and plenty of winter sport adventures, like skiing and snowmobiling.
Typically, winters in Nevada vary greatly by region. While the southern half of the state sees temperatures close to the 60s during the day, night can fall to the 30s. Nevada follows desert climate rules, after all!
San Jacinto is part of larger Elko County. For this northern portion of the state, average highs are often hugging 40 degrees.
However, in 1937, San Jacinto would experience a winter day like no other. On January eighth, a frigid temperature of minus 50 degrees was recorded!
This low temperature would cement San Jacinto in Nevada’s history books as the coldest temperature ever recorded.
The arctic-like weather did not let up, hanging around for many days! During much of January, the lows never rose above freezing.
In 1937, all of Nevada felt the chilling waves of the cold front. Eastern Nevada saw lows in the negative 30s and 40s, while even the southern tip of the state dealt with a mere ten degrees!
1937 experienced many winter storms. Unrelentingly, they came one after another, causing mayhem and endangering lives throughout the state of Nevada. Yet, people persevered, with some making the most of it.
Many western and southwestern states saw record breaking winters that year. The lowest ever recorded temperatures were noted in both Nevada and California in 1937.
Thankfully today, with modern heating systems and warmer houses, we can appreciate winter scenery much more comfortably.
Although there are still record-breaking winters in Nevada, none has yet to surpass that day so long ago. San Jacinto, Nevada is a relic of the past, but it is remembered still for that very cold day in 1937.
