Petroglyph Canyon is one of the most easily accessible rock art sites in Valley of Fire State Park. One of the best ways of viewing the canyon's petroglyphs is by taking Mouse's Tank Trail, a simple mile long trail that's good for all skill levels.
You'll find the trail head approximately a mile north of the park's Visitor Center. The short hike will lead you through an incredible landscape of sandstone formations and it isn't long until you're totally surrounded by amazing rock art.
Covering the canyon walls are an immense amount of petroglyphs. The trail contains the highest concentration of ancient rock art out of the entire park. You'll be overwhelmed with how much there is to look at.
The sight of thousands of petroglyphs covering almost every inch of the canyon walls is simply stunning. Some of these extraordinary petroglyphs are thought to be up to 3,000 years old.
Archaeologists and historians believe that the art is a result from a number of native groups who traveled through the area thousands of years ago. They don't believe any group actually lived in the canyon due to the lack of water.
However, it is known that the Gypsum People were the first people to gather in the Valley of Fire for ceremonial purposes. Other groups that are known to have passed through this area are the Anasazi Pueblo People and the Southern Paiute.
At the end of the hike, you'll come across the "water tank" for which the area is named after. This natural tank holds water all year long, even during the summer time. This region is just full of incredible wonders and is definitely worth a visit.
