Horseback riding in Nebraska is splendid any time of the year, but there’s something about a winter ride that’s so peaceful and serene. There are hundreds of unique places all across the state to take trail rides in the winter; one of those is Country Trail Stables in the scenic Ponca Hills.
Country Trail Stables is a small outfit run by a couple doing what they truly love. Their home/business is located in Ponca Hills near Fort Calhoun, not terribly far from downtown Omaha. However, it feels secluded and miles away from anything.
The trails are absolutely gorgeous any time of year, and every ride is tailored to the riders' ability level. The rides are relaxed and not typically the nose-to-tail type - unless you want yours to be.
A two-hour ride lets you explore and enjoy the landscape. Because you and your group are on a private ride, the journey goes at the pace at which you are comfortable.
You may be within close proximity to the city, but that's easy to forget that when you're out on the silent trails. It's just you, the trails, the horses, and your companions.
The trail owners are former "rat race" residents, and now that they're out and doing what they love, they don't rely on technology for communication. If you want to reach them, email and Facebook messaging will do you no good - you'll have to make a good old-fashioned phone call.
The trail’s location makes it easily accessible for city dwellers who have never had the chance to get out and ride. They offer day, evening, and night rides – and, of course, year-round riding (weather permitting). There are no walk-ins available; rides are by advance appointment only, and the only way to make an appointment is to make a phone call.
